Three months ago, LSS introduced the piaster economy—a member-driven currency system that fundamentally changes how players engage with the platform. It’s not just a new feature. Piasters are LSS’s internal currency. Members earn them by winning tournaments, purchase them directly, or receive them as part of their premium membership. Then, they use piasters to register for tournaments of their choosing. That’s it. No preset packages. No forced choices. Just member agency.

Here’s what changes:

1. Transparency Members see exactly what each tournament costs in piasters. No hidden fees. No surprise charges. The platform’s economics are visible.

2. Flexibility Want to play in five simultaneous tournaments? Go ahead. Want to focus on one premium event? That’s fine too. Your piaster balance is yours to deploy as you see fit.

3. Demand-Driven Evolution When members consistently spend piasters on certain tournament formats, we see it. We don’t need surveys or focus groups. The market signals are immediate and real. This tells us what to build next.

4. Democratization Without Gatekeeping To celebrate LSS’s 20-year anniversary, we distributed free piasters to many members. This wasn’t charity—it was a statement: access to premium tournaments shouldn’t be gatekept by wealth or geography. A player in Lagos or Lahore can now compete in the same premium events as a player in London or Los Angeles.

Three months in, here’s what’s actually happening:

The King of the Month Tournament

Every month, LSS runs a premium tournament called “King of the Month.” Players register using piasters. The tournament runs for 3-4 months (estimate) with a guaranteed prize pool. For the 4th it is 560 piasters for first place, 280 for second, 210 for third, 140 for fourth.

This is concrete. Real. Happening right now.

What makes this interesting isn’t just the prize pool—it’s what happens next. Winners can do three things:

  1. Reinvest piasters in new tournaments (keep playing, keep competing)
  2. Accumulate piasters toward future premium events (strategic planning)
  3. Convert to fiat currency (theoretically, in 2027+, as the ecosystem matures. Not that it is technically impossible now, but we only allow it if a certain piaster threshold is met. And we have no players yet who do already meet that threshold.)

The third option is crucial. We’re not saying “play forever on our platform.” We’re saying: if you’re good enough, if you win enough, you can monetize your skill. That’s a professional pathway. That matters.

But here’s the real insight: most winners reinvest. They see the piaster as a ticket to the next tournament, the next challenge, the next opponent, the next highest level, a real chess course or training, etc. The currency creates momentum.

Premium members receive a monthly piaster stipend, plus the ability to play more simultaneous games. This isn’t gatekeeping—it’s acceleration. For a few euros or dollars per month, a player gets:

Here’s a question I didn’t expect to ask five years ago: Why do business professionals care about chess?

With this option then making sure that your clock does only start its ticking after we know for sure that you ‘saw’ the move.
