About LSS: A 20-Year Legacy, A Global Future.
For over two decades, the Lechenicher Schachserver (LSS) has been a bastion of serious correspondence chess, built on a foundation of technical excellence and community trust.
It is a story of passion and dedication, born in Germany and now poised for its next chapter on the global stage. This is the story of LSS—its proud past and its exciting future.
Ortwin Paetzold
The Foundation: Two Decades of German Engineering
The story of LSS begins over 20 years ago with one person: Ortwin Paetzold, a programmer by profession and a chess lover and innovator by passion.
In an era when correspondence chess was still dominated by postcards, Ortwin was at the forefront of the movement to digitize the online version game. He pioneered server-based solutions with a singular goal: to make the world smaller and more efficient for international chess players.
From day one, LSS was built on a core principle of modularity and flexibility. Ortwin meticulously engineered the platform so that new tournament formats, time controls, and variants like Chess960 could be introduced with ease. This disciplined, forward-thinking approach allowed him to build a remarkably stable and versatile platform—a feat that would normally require a large team.
This dedication to quality cultivated a unique and loyal community. LSS became known as a home for serious players by requiring the use of real names, fostering a culture of respect, netiquette, and professional preparation. The result was a community that values the integrity of the game, in the logical tradition of FIDE and ICCF.
Erik van Dijk
The Evolution: A Partnership for Global Growth
Sustainable growth requires a broader base. The time came for the next stage of evolution—not to change the soul of LSS, but to give it the global platform it deserved.
The connection was forged when Ortwin Paetzold met Erik L. van Dijk, an ICCF Correspondence Chess International Master and an active player on the LSS platform. Erik, a global investor and the principal of UAE-based strategic consultancy One4All Global, was profoundly impressed by what Ortwin had built. He saw a flexible, fast-thinking founder driven by a pure spirit of structured innovation.
A direct partnership was formed, creating a powerful synergy: German Engineering Meets UAE-Based Global Strategy.
Ortwin continues to lead the technical development of the LSS arena, ensuring the platform remains a masterpiece of stability. Erik and the One4All team focus on broadening the player base, expanding into new markets—especially in Emerging and Frontier economies—and developing a new clientele of chess academies and professionals. This partnership combines Erik’s life’s passion for chess with his professional expertise as a quantitative, AI-focused investor, with a key focus on introducing faster time controls to energize the platform.
